European Waste Directive classes composting as recycling, however most of the time it cannot be recycled in the traditional way currently. It is important when thinking about what packaging to use, you need to bear this in mind as calling compostable materials recyclable is misleading to the end user.

This is a distinction that a lot of people get confused. The difference is that whilst they both break down over time, what they turn into when they break down, varies greatly.
Biodegradable means that they are made from biological resources, however the time it takes to break down varies, the environments it needs to break down varies and sometimes the resulting material can actually be harmful to the environment!
Compostable however have a certified time limit and break down into nutrient rich compost. The break down process is managed by a commercial composter and takes around 3 months to fully decompose.
Unfortunately, there currently is no perfect solution. As well as that, every business has different needs, however that doesn’t mean that companies should do nothing.
